Spirit Week!
Spirit Week is here, and it’s one of the most exciting times on our school calendar. A big thank you to our senior student leaders and committees for their hard work in making this week rewarding for all involved. Special appreciation goes to our dedicated staff for assisting with the behind-the-scenes for a fantastic line-up of events.
Throughout the week, there are numerous activities designed to create positive connections among peers in Care Groups, emphasising House and school spirit, and creating positive lasting memories between our staff and students. The week concludes this Friday with our highly anticipated Care Carnival, a day full of entertaining activities and challenges between Care Groups. The main aim of the event being, FUN and PARTICIPATION! I look forward to seeing everyone at the events throughout the week.
We will do a full wrap-up of SPIRIT Week in our final school Newsletter for the term next fortnight.
Proudly a b kinder school
Proserpine State High School was proud to host the first b kinder summit in the Whitsundays last week. We welcomed students from both primary and secondary schools from across the region to participate in the event that saw outstanding collaboration towards a common goal of sharing kindness in our school and greater communities.
We are proud of our six ambassadors - Savannah Lamont, Mia Vloedmans, Abbie Green, Elizabeth Pascoe, Georgia Whitton and Charli Young who will be hosting our b kinder day at school on Tuesday 24th June selling b kinder cards and soft drinks.
Terrific results at Queensland Intermediate Schools Cup
Our Year 9 volleyball teams delivered outstanding performances at the Volleyball Queensland Intermediate Schools Cup last weekend. Our students proudly represented our school and showcasing their talent, teamwork, and determination on the courts.
Our Year 9 Girls Honours team had a strong campaign, finishing nineth in the state. Competing against the top teams across Queensland, our girls demonstrated resilience and skill throughout the tournament, earning a well-deserved spot in the top ten.
Our Year 9 Girls Division 2 team put in an excellent effort, placing fifth overall. Their consistent play and strong team spirit were key factors in their top five finish.
Our Year 9 Boys Division 2 team had an exceptional run, securing third place in the state. Their podium finish highlights their competitive edge and the hard work they put into their training.
All three teams should be proud of their accomplishments and the way they represented our school on the Gold Coast.
A special thank you to our Teachers Ben Smith, Kate Thomson, and Nicky Ryan who prepared our students for the event and travelled with them and supported them while away. We're proud of you all!

Senior Student Leaders Inducted
Our school proudly welcomes a new group of student leaders into our highly regarded leadership program. These students are continuing to refine their skills in preparation for nominating for leadership roles next term at our school.
Since the induction of these leaders two weeks ago, we have finished our final round of senior leadership workshops. These workshops continue to identify leadership abilities, as we empower our emerging leaders to embrace challenges, set ambitious goals, and strive for excellence - learning valuable life skills along the way. All members of the leadership group in their respective roles have an opportunity to shape the direction of our school while contributing positively to our community. We congratulate each of them for being passionate and ambitious towards their goals.
Outstanding Student Achievements
Junior ATSIAP team bring home bronze medals
Congratulations to our junior team who placed third in the 2025 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Aspirations Program (ATISAP) Regional Challenge for Secondary Schools.
Our students each received a bronze medal for their Oral Persuasive Speech Category and Visual Arts Category entries.
Well done!
JCU Winter School Program
Two of our Year 10 first nation students applied for the 2025 Indigenous Winter School Program. Avalon Black Stone and Miley Thomson were successful and notified by JCU via email that they had been accepted to go to JCU Townsville Campus and undergo residential preparatory program for high school students. This is the perfect opportunity to embrace the university life and gain skills for success in tertiary education. Unfortunately, Avalon is unavailable to attend but Miley is excited and keen to know more about what JCU can offer in Health which she is interested in.
We have a large number of students who have taken up many amazing opportunities on offer this term. Congratulations to our Year 11 students Miley Thomson and Avalon Black-Stone who
Queensland State Library Young Researchers Program
Congratulations to our seniors Millie Groom (Year 10) and Tiarne Watson (Year 11) who were successful in their applications for the 2025 Queensland State Library Young Researchers Program. The duo make up 10 students selected from across Queensland, an achievement our school is very proud of.
Both Millie and Tiarne had to develop an inquiry idea about Queensland for their entry to be selected, which they will now research during a week long expenses-paid experience hosted by the State Library during the September school holidays. They will also participate in workshops, access State Library collections and explore the Queensland Museum, Queensland Art Gallery, GOMA, Anzac Square Memorial Galleries and cultural events that are on in the city at the same time.
Congratulations to our Teacher Lucy Schaeche-Priestley who has been selected as one of two Teacher Chaperones from across the state. In preparation for their trip, Lucy, Millie and Tiarne will participate in an online research induction/program. What a wonderful opportuntiy for you all!
STEM Girl Power Camp
Millie Groom was one of 70 Year 10 students and staff selected to participate in the Department of Education’s 2025 STEM Girl Power Camp last month in Brisbane. Millie took part in a variety of events including workshops and networking opportunities with experts and inspiring role models from diverse STEM fields.
Millie explored STEM pathways and discussed the importance of STEM communication at the Queensland Museum and Wheel of Brisbane. The STEM Girl Power Camp not only fostered Millie's understanding of STEM's significance in society, but also enhanced her leadership, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication skills.
As a 2025 STEM Ambassador, Millie will now organise and deliver a STEM event during National Science Week in Term 3, with the aim of inspiring younger students to pursue STEM subjects and careers. Well done Millie!
Year 9s take up nutritious cooking task

Students shine in Cross Country and Touch Football
In Cross Country, four of our dedicated athletes made the Northern side at state level. Our Year 7 student Jack Oberg placed second in the 13 Boys Division with a 3km time of 11m11s. Our Year 7 student Shailee Mewha won the 13 Girls Division with a blistering 3km time of 10m 49s. Year 10 student Millie Groom placed second in the 15-years girls 4km with a time of 16m46s. Our Year 10 student Peppa Geisel was absent, but was selected in the side as her previous times were submitted for selection. All of our runners showcased their endurance, determination, and sportsmanship across the challenging courses.
In Touch Football, our Year 7 student Nate Sheather was selected as a Northern representative and demonstrated great skill and leadership on the field. His speed, agility, and game awareness were key contributors to his selection.
Congratulations to Jack, Shailee, Millie, Peppa, and Nate on your outstanding sports achievements!
Cricketers blitz the field at Mackay Gala Day
On Monday, 26th May our Junior Boys Cricket Team travelled to Mackay and participated in the Mackay/Whitsunday Gala Cricket Day.
In the first 15 over game our boys played Catherine McAuley College 1 (CMC) and batted first. Alex Valmadre and Emmerson Baker opened the batting. Emmerson was first to be dismissed which brought Reg Davies to the crease. Reg and Alex had a solid partnership taking the score to 65 before Alex was caught for a well-constructed 29. Kobi Whitty joined Reg and they added another 11 runs before confusion reigned and Reg was left stranded half way down the pitch being run out for a solid 22. Lucas Appleton came in and contributed 10 to the total before being dismissed LBW making us 4-98 with one over remaining. Kobi was bowled on the last ball of our innings for 9 taking us to a total of 100 off our 15 overs.
Our opening bowlers, Ben Hope and Brad Hetherington started well. Alex Valmadre took the first wicket in the third over having CMC at 1-14 after three overs. Sean then took his first wicket in the fourth over to have them at 2-18. Kobi, Lucas and Emmerson all bowled tight over following restricting the score to 2/25 after six overs. Harry Camm picked up a wicket second ball of his over and not to be outdone Oscar Kelly repeated it next over having CMC now 4-31 after eight overs. Cabe Manley and Sean then kept the screws on over the next 2 overs before Ben Hope returned for his second over, again getting a wicket with his second ball, plus a run out to have CMC in real trouble at 6-43 after 11 overs. Brad followed up with his first wicket before Lucas took his wicket in the last over. Catherine McAuley 1 finished at 8–69 for a solid win to our boys.
In the second game we played Catherine McAuley College 2 (CMC2) and sent them in to bat. Alex Valmadre struck in the third over to have them at 1-12 after three. From there we didn’t take any more wickets while the opposition's two best batsmen made solid progress. After nine overs they had progressed to 1-39 having us in a strong position to chase. Unfortunately, their strongest batsmen put his foot down and raced to 54 before retiring in the thirteenth over and the other strong batsmen accelerated to finish unbeaten on 39 taking them to a final total of 124.
Emmerson and Alex opened again with Alex making the early departure this time for three having us 1-22 in the third over. Oscar joined Emmerson and they scored freely until Emmerson was dismissed for 24 making us 2–52 in the sixth over. Oscar continued to score at a run a ball and Lucas just about matched his scoring rate advancing our total to 86 before Oscar was dismissed. Brad Hetherington joined Lucas and after a slow start steadily scored his nine while Lucas progressed to 17 before being bowled in the last over. We fell just short making 109 from our 15 overs.
We had a great day with the biggest highlights being a brilliant catch by Kobi Whitty in the first game and the way our boys managed and organised themselves to ensure all players were equally involved. It was lovely to be represented by such keen enthusiastic young cricketers. Well done boys!
Silver medal at State Championships for Jaylynn
Duo enjoy local hospital Heroes in Health Program
Our Year 12 students Archer Philipson and Belle Howard recently attended the Heroes in Health Program at the Mater Hospital in Mackay. Heroes in Health is a joint collaboration between James Cook University (JCU) and the Mater Hospital, which is a structured two-day program exploring Medical, Nursing and Allied Health careers. Students are given an unrivalled opportunity to go behind-the-scenes at a working hospital, don scrubs, do hospital rounds and chat with health care staff giving them a true feel for what it's like working in multiple health care disciplines. Archer and Belle were also able to speak with JCU advisors that provide information about courses of interest and university life. Well done to you both!

Students network with industry professionals
Last Thursday afternoon, five of our Year 11 General Business students completed work experience at the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) World Environment Day held at the Shute Harbour Marine Terminal. The event was proudly supported by Whitsunday Regional Council and helped bring the conversation on sustainability into the heart of one of our State's most iconic regions.
The event was part of a broader effort by QTIC to integrate sustainability into Queensland's tourism sector and was attended by a number of key guests including the Leader of the Opposition of Queensland, Steven Miles and Whitsunday Mayor Ry Collins. Guest speakers included Stewart Moore (EarthCheck), Andrew Picone (Pew Charitable Trusts), Fiona Walmsley (Virgin Australia), Johnny Gaskell (Great Barrier Reef Foundation) and Robbie Congoo (Yooribaya Cultural Experiences).
This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to network and gain valuable experience in the Tourism Industry. They all received a lovely thank you from the organisers. Thank you to our Acting Head of Department Business and Technology Mickayla Dargush for organising this opportunity for our students.
Catch up with our Leos Club in the community
Our Whitsunday Leos Club members enjoyed breakfast together last Friday morning before hosting their meeting about upcoming events. The volunteer group planned assisting the Proserpine Lions Club members at the Dingo Beach Whitfunday and at Show Whitsunday in a fortnight's time. Thank you to Proserpine Lions Club members Jane Bettridge and Misty Bland for cooking up the delicious breakfast and kindly supporting our Whitsunday Leos Club at each meeting.

Isla enjoys Ergon Energy apprenticeship event
Our Year 10 student Isla Bennett attended Ergon Energy's Apprenticeship Information Night last week after hearing about the event in our school's weekly Student Opportunities email.
The fully immersive experience included a mixture of classroom information and the opportunity to hear from current Ergon Energy apprentices and trainers.
The students in attendance then spent time in the training yard where they tried on a harness and went up in the bucket lift. The evening was very informative and provided an insight into Ergon Energy apprenticeships.

Griffith University School Visit
On Monday, we had a visit from Matt Doran, Indigenous Outreach Officer from Griffith University on the Gold Coast. Matt chatted one-on-one with students interested in university after graduation.
Matt spoke with Miley Thomson about optional pathways she can go to study Nursing and what indigenous support, activities, and scholarships are available at Griffith University.
Under 8's Day
What a beautiful day for the annual Under 8's Day at Proserpine State School. Firstly, I would like to thank my brother Leo Gabey for sharing his cultural artefacts that he has accumulated and passed down through family generations over the years. I would like to thank our student representatives Cassius McLeod, Stefany Allan and Savanna Allan, and Tavis McDonald for running activities for the kids who once again enjoying face, hand and plate painting, air pump rocket launches, and didgeridoo playing. The artefact table was a draw card this year with curious little minds wanting to know about the wumera, message and clap sticks, boomerang, spear, local ochre, and necklace made out of seeds. Over all it was great experience for the high school students to interact and chat to parents and staff and sharing their cultural knowledge.
Reconciliation Week – Whitsunday Regional Council event
I was very honoured and proud of our students who attended the annual Whitsunday Regional Council Reconciliation Week celebration at the Proserpine Entertainment Centre on Tuesday 27th June. Before the ceremony began, we assembled on the grassed area where students raised the flags, Mayor Collins spoke about the importance of reconciliation within our community and guest speaker Robert Congoo performed the Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country.
Our Senior Student Indigenous Leader Tavis McDonald spoke brilliantly on behalf of our school about what 'Reconciliation: Bridging Now to Next' means to him. Tavis' outstanding speech encapsulated the true message of why all Australians need to work together and walk together as one in the future.
The one thing I admired the most from the event was that all of the student speeches on the day were different, and each speaker personalised their own perspectives of reconciliation.

Where are they now? Allira Griffiths (nee Norman)
What year did you graduate? 2003
What were your senior subjects at Proserpine State High School? Math B, Math C, Biology, English, HPE and Economics.
Favourite Proserpine State High School memory? I have so many great memories from my time at Proserpine State High School! Sport was a huge part of my senior years and I always looked forward to my regular athletics training sessions. We were so lucky to have such dedicated and fun coaches in Mr Cox and Mr Harling. You could always hear Coxy coming from a mile away with his booming voice!
I also had many memorable trips travelling for sports (volleyball, touch, hockey, soccer, athletics were my favourite!), school band tours, school camps, various maths and business camps and public speaking tournaments.
My final year of school was such a highlight for me, where I was honoured to represent my peers as School Vice Captain. The final year was a blur of hard work, fun and lots of sports – culminating in some amazing awards, achieving an OP1 and some pretty awesome end-of-year celebrations! Despite all of these fun times though, my favourite memory would have to be meeting my future husband at Proserpine State High School!
Where did life take you after you graduated? After graduating high school, I moved to Brisbane to study a Bachelor of Business, Majoring in Accountancy (with an extended Major in Business Law and Taxation) at Queensland University of Technology. I worked part-time while studying and in my final year I also provided private tutoring lessons to other students, which I really enjoyed.
I absolutely loved university – I met some great life-long friends, had lots of late-night study sessions and was invited to join the university team for a business start-up project, which was such a rewarding experience! I graduated in 2006 and was awarded the Dean’s Award for Excellence – awarded to the student with the highest graduating GPA across the Accountancy and Banking and Finance majors at QUT, an achievement that I was (and still am) extremely proud of.
After university, I accepted a graduate position with Deloitte in external audit, while also completing further studies to obtain my Chartered Accounting qualification. On a personal front, I was fortunate to marry my high school sweetheart, have two beautiful boys, travel, and move back to the Whitsundays where we enjoy plenty of fishing, horse riding and time with family and friends. There really is no place like home!
What job position are you currently in? I have a consulting business which specialises in supporting providers in the aged care and community services sector, a purpose-driven sector that I’ve really found a passion for. I work remotely from an office in Proserpine where I provide consulting services to clients, run webinars (virtual training sessions) and occasionally travel for onsite visits to clients who are located all around Australia.
Tell us about why you picked Accounting and what your study/training journey has been? Ever since I was very young I have loved numbers (my favourite subject was Maths) and I have always wanted to be an Accountant. I actually deliberately didn’t pick Accounting as a high school subject as I knew that I’d be doing it for the rest of my life!
When I was in primary school, my older sister Nicole would also occasionally write maths exams for me at home (based on work three years ahead of my grade!) and I wasn’t allowed to finish until I could get all of the answers correct…this was before computers and the internet were mainstream, and we didn’t have Netflix or Tik Tok to occupy our time!
This career choice has led me down a pathway from moving to Brisbane for university, to working for a Big 4 accounting firm, completing postgraduate studies (Chartered Accountancy), to travelling around Australia and gaining first-hand experience on how many different businesses across a variety of sectors operate. I am very fortunate to now apply the knowledge and skills that I have developed to supporting a sector that I’m passionate about, while also having the flexibility to work remotely and live in the beautiful Whitsundays.
Best experience since graduating at Proserpine State High School? Aside from getting married and having our beautiful boys, perhaps one of my favourite experiences was being lucky enough to catch my first ever black marlin while we were filming with the team at iFish TV! That was a fun day!
Best advice for current Year 12 students? Be true to yourself, surround yourself with good people, prioritise happiness and don’t be afraid to go after your dreams!
Favourite quote? One of my favourite quotes is “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity”. to me this is about investing in yourself, putting in the hard work and being ready to take advantage of opportunities when they arise – and having the confidence to say yes! Sometimes, others may only see the ‘luck’ (or the outcome), but there is often so much hard work and preparation before the ‘luck’! And of course… have fun and smile!
