Griffith University School Visit

Miley.jpg

On Monday, we had a visit from Matt Doran, Indigenous Outreach Officer from Griffith University on the Gold Coast. Matt chatted one-on-one with students interested in university after graduation.

Matt spoke with Miley Thomson about optional pathways she can go to study Nursing and what indigenous support, activities, and scholarships are available at Griffith University.

Under 8's Day

What a beautiful day for the annual Under 8's Day at Proserpine State School. Firstly, I would like to thank my brother Leo Gabey for sharing his cultural artefacts that he has accumulated and passed down through family generations over the years. I would like to thank our student representatives Cassius McLeod, Stefany Allan and Savanna Allan, and Tavis McDonald for running activities for the kids who once again enjoying face, hand and plate painting, air pump rocket launches, and didgeridoo playing. The artefact table was a draw card this year with curious little minds wanting to know about the wumera, message and clap sticks, boomerang, spear, local ochre, and necklace made out of seeds. Over all it was great experience for the high school students to interact and chat to parents and staff and sharing their cultural knowledge.

Reconciliation Week – Whitsunday Regional Council event

I was very honoured and proud of our students who attended the annual Whitsunday Regional Council Reconciliation Week celebration at the Proserpine Entertainment Centre on Tuesday 27th June. Before the ceremony began, we assembled on the grassed area where students raised the flags, Mayor Collins spoke about the importance of reconciliation within our community and guest speaker Robert Congoo performed the Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country.

Our Senior Student Indigenous Leader Tavis McDonald spoke brilliantly on behalf of our school about what 'Reconciliation: Bridging Now to Next' means to him. Tavis' outstanding speech encapsulated the true message of why all Australians need to work together and walk together as one in the future.

The one thing I admired the most from the event was that all of the student speeches on the day were different, and each speaker personalised their own perspectives of reconciliation.

QATSIF Round 17 Scholarship

A reminder that the Round 17 QATSIF Scholarship is open for our Year 10 and 11 students. If your child is performing well at school and attendance is high, they have the opportunity of applying for a scholarship that will not only help families with financial costs associated with school but encourage students to value education and build confidence. In term 3, I will be starting the process of reviewing academic performance results from their report cards and attendance percentage to collate a list of eligible students. Please go on the QATSIF website to find out more information on www.qatsif.org.au.
