Health Gateway to Industry School
On Monday, 24th February, we were proud to present our first Health Gateway to Industry Schools Project event, welcoming more than 60 Year 10, 11, and 12 students from across the Whitsundays. This event provided students with a valuable opportunity to explore the diverse education, employment, and training pathways available in the Health Industry. By networking with health professionals in a supportive environment, students gained insights into the many career options available to them.
The program will continue to support our students by offering guidance and resources to help them make informed decisions about their futures. With an increasing number of post-school pathways available, students now have more opportunities than ever to pursue careers that align with their skills and interests.
A big thank you to Mrs. Porter and our Senior Schooling Team for organising this incredible opportunity for our youth. We also extend our gratitude to our guest speakers and industry experts from the Queensland Ambulance Service, Proserpine Nursing Home, Connect & Grow, and the Mackay Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Employment Program for inspiring our students.
House spirit shines at Swimming Carnival
I commend all students present at our annual Swimming Carnival, highlighting great House spirit, teamwork, and exemplary conduct throughout the day. The rain at the end of the day certainly didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of our students and staff.
A special mention goes to our senior students for their impressive leadership in guiding their respective Houses. Their enthusiasm, encouragement, and dedication played a crucial role in fostering a strong sense of team spirit and participation. Throughout the day, students wholeheartedly embraced our school values of Respect, Responsibility, and Being Engaged, ensuring a positive and inclusive atmosphere.
Congratulations to Kennedy House for winning overall, and to our respective Age Champions who received their medallions on Assembly. Please find the full list of Age Champions in our Sports News section below.
Lions Youth of the Year
Congratulations to our Year 12 student Allegra Bradley who won the Lion's Youth of the Year Competition - Proserpine Club Night. Allegra represented our school with fellow Year 12 peers, Savannah Lamont and Thalia Foster who participated in the interview and public speaking process. Allegra will now go on to represent our region at the Zone Final this Sunday 9th March. Well done to all our students for their strong representation. We wish Allegra the best of luck at the Zone Final!

Assessment Schedules and Helping Your Child Succeed at School
A reminder to all families, Year 7–12 student assessments and exams can be viewed in the QParents app to support your child’s studies and preparation. Scroll down to the Upcoming Events section to see relevant dates for students. You can also download their full Assessment Planner for the year.
Assessment schedules have been released to help students and parents monitor progress and stay informed about individual assessment requirements. These schedules vary depending on the year level and subjects in each student’s academic program. Students can access their schedules through OneSchool, while parents and carers can view them via QParents. The senior assessment schedule is also available on our school website.
As we commence the first academic reporting period, it is a good time to revisit key strategies that can help parents and carers support their child/ren in reaching their full learning potential at Proserpine State High School. One of the most important steps is understanding your child’s assessment plan and helping them manage their study time.
Success in both junior and senior years requires students to develop strong organisational skills and study habits to balance the demands of their academic and co-curricular programs. It is essential to stay informed about your child’s study and assessment commitments.
Balance between assessment requirements and outside of school commitment is essential to minimise stress.
Your child should have a clear study plan that allocates time for homework, assignments, and regular review or revision for each subject. This study plan should also account for co-curricular and extracurricular commitments, ensuring a balanced lifestyle that maximises achievement.
If you are unsure about what your child should be doing or what an effective study plan looks like, we encourage you to contact our school via email principal@proserpineshs.eq.edu.au and our administration team will connect you with your Year Level Deputy Principal, Guidance Officer or Year Level Coordinator.
Attendance – Making Every Day Count
Our school promotes an attendance target of 95% for all students. However, attendance over recent years has seen a whole school attendance data fall well below an acceptable level, which significantly impacts student learning and ultimately individual student achievement.
While there are justifiable reasons for student absences due to illness, attendance data indicates a growing number of unjustified absences. Concerningly, many of these are parent-condoned, impacting students’ opportunities to reach their full potential. Every Day Counts highlights that regular school attendance is essential for student success academically and socially. Students who attend school every day develop strong routines, build resilience, and stay engaged in their learning.
The research is clear - students who miss even a day of school can fall behind, making it harder to catch up. By ensuring students attend every possible school day, parents and carers are giving them the best chance to succeed. If you require support to improve your child’s attendance, please contact our school via email at enrolments@proserpineshs.eq.edu.au, our support staff are here to help.
What Parents Can Do:
- Talk about the importance of attending school every day and set that as the expectation. Regular school attendance helps establish good habits for future workplace attendance.
- Help your child maintain daily routines, such as completing homework and getting a good night’s sleep. Teenagers typically need eight to nine hours of sleep to stay healthy and alert. You may also need to monitor their use of the internet, mobile phone, and TV at night to ensure they are not staying up too late or being disturbed while sleeping.
- Avoid scheduling hair, dental, or medical appointments during school hours. Plan family holidays during scheduled school breaks to prevent your child from missing classes and falling behind.
- Ensure your child stays home only when they are genuinely unwell.
- If your child wants to stay home to finish an assignment, encourage them to attend school instead, make attendance the top priority.
- Use assessment and course planners to help your teenager organise their study time, ensuring they do not have to stay up late the night before an assignment is due.
Assessment and NAPLAN preparation

eLearning Round 3 CYOD orders close on Friday
Our Round 3 CYOD order will close this Friday, 7th March. A 60% deposit or full payment is required, and the order form must be submitted to our Administration Office by this date. Order information can be found on our school website along with the order form under the Curriculum/eLearning tab. These devices will be issued early in Term 2.
A reminder that students in the BYOD eLearning program will need to return the BYOD agreement form to our Administration Office so they can be reconnected to the network, internet and printers. Students should be able to connect one to two days after forms have been received. Forms can be collected from our Resource Centre or accessed on our school website. Students will need to download the ‘Intune’ program at home prior to connection. This will allow the BYOD device access to the school Wi-Fi and the resources it provides. Instructions on this process can be found at our Resource Centre or on our school website.
Please encourage your child to bring their charged laptop to school every day to supplement their curriculum activities. It is essential that students have their devices at school to help complete their assessment. The school has a limited number of devices for loaning, and these are only available to students not in an eLearning program.
Help us raise funds for World's Greatest Shave

Our school is proud to participate in our 26th Leukaemia Foundation “World’s Greatest Shave” on Friday 14th March 2025. This will be our school's major fundraiser for Term 1. Last year we raised more than $13,600. This year we are aiming to raise more than $10,000, with almost $4000 raised so far.
This year, Mr Cox (18 years shaving) and Miss Thomson (6 years colouring) are joined by Year 12s Zac Gould, Callum Henry, Breeanna Jorgensen, Blake Lovelock, Archer Philipson, Tyler Hicks (Year 11), Eli Wallis (Year 9) and Lani Scarborough (Year 7). Our school will be participating in Funky Hair Friday on March 14, where students come are encouraged to come to school with funky hair or have their hair coloured by our Student Council as part of the World’s Greatest Shave in our Luke Complex.
Donations can be made in Care Groups, in donation boxes at our canteen or you can donate online by clicking the link here or via the QR Code.
Fundraising from a sausage sizzle plus soft drinks on Shave Day at our school will be conducted. Our school recycling program "Containers for Change" will be contributing funds from the collection of bottles, cans and tetra packs this year again as well.
Remember if each student donates $5 we will raise approximately $6000 to help research into blood cancers and support those people and their families during their treatment and fight against these diseases. We would love to beat our target and remember every little bit helps.
Study Spot available for all students
We encourage all of our students to take up the opportunity for additional study and curriculum support at our Study Spot every Wednesday in our Resource Centre. See the flyer below for more information.

CQ University present Choices Program
Year 12 Senior Drama students bring plays to life
Our Year 12 Senior Drama students performed their first piece of internal assessment last week in the style of 'Theatre of the Absurd'. Students were inspired by works from Samuel Beckett's 'Endgame' and Harold Pinter's 'The Birthday Party' that leaves audience members thinking about ideas of existentialism and what could happen if human existence lacks meaning, or purpose and communication breaks down.

Deadly Choices underway for Term 1
Our Year 8 Deadly Choices students have enjoyed participating in our Healthy Lifestyle Program delivered by Chris Viti from the Mackay Hospital Health Unit.
Our Year 10 and 11 Deadly Choices students cooked up healthy wraps with our Mackay Deadly Choices Mentors Corbin Tass, Uriel Pearson and Jai Quakawoot.
It has been great to see new faces each week taking part in both programs!
Girls confidence grows under STEM mentorship
Four of our Year 10 students Mackenzie Cantamessa, Abby Coghlan, Millie Groom and Mia Matthews are extending their learning by engaging in a STEM specific program, Curious Minds, for girls who live in rural and remote regions.
The program aims to empower girls who are passonate, high performers in STEM to explore their full potential across topics of interest of their choosing. Our students were accepted into the program last year and they attended a STEM Camp in Adelaide in Decemeber.
Following on from the STEM Camp experience, Mackenzie, Abby, Millie and Mia have been matched with their own personal STEM mentor who currently works in a field of our students' interest. They link in with their mentor every 3 weeks and discuss their personal learning goals, future study and career options as well as work on a study project together.
Mackenzie is interested in becoming a Vet and her mentor is a Biological Scientist. Together they have been looking at fluroescent cells and genes, with her personal project, a research paper, exploring how different processes in micro-organisms affect Vet Science practices.
Abby is interested in fields of Engineering and Biology and her mentor is a Brisbane-based Scientist who works for the CSIRO. Abby's project is creating a presentation for primary school students about the different types of STEM they may come across daily.
Millie's is hoping to pursue a career in the Health/Sports Science fields and her mentor is a Sydney-based Scientist who works in various fields. Millie is still deciding on a project to complete as she is interested in all aspects of STEM. She said she has enjoyed meeting people with the same interests throughout the Curious Minds program.
Mia has her sights set on a career in the Medical/Health world. Her mentor is a Neuroscientist and is helping Mia with her powerpoint presentation looking at the affects of dementia on the brain as humans age. Mia has been analysing MRI scans and comparing data on a healthy brain verse a brain affected by dementia. "I chose this style of project to improve my public speaking skills," she said.

The Australian Mathematics Trust (AMT) and Australian Science Innovations (ASI) jointly deliver the Curious Minds program, which is supported by the Australian National University.
Sarah on CSIRO Youth Reference Council
Our Year 9 student Sarah Hart is enjoying the opportunity to be part of the CSIRO's Youth Reference Council. Last year Sarah was selected as one of 25 out of 600 applicants to be named a Young Future Shaper. She was then short-listed and named as one of 8 students from across Australia to make up the first CSIRO Youth Reference Council memebers. Sarah attended a STEM education event in Melbourne at the start of the year at Monash University representing and advocating for the diverse young voices of Australia.
But it wasn't all business, Sarah also explored the CSIRO's mixed-reality laboratories checking out the cutting-edge technology and meeting the experts who work in the field.
"A highlight was the solar panel lab tour at the Flexible Electronics Lab," she said.
Being part of the Council is helping Sarah build her STEM problem solving, creativity, teamwork and communication skills as she has already had the opportunity to run meetings and be involved in Q&A sessions with leading scientists. She and her fellow Council members are working on a variety of projects this year delivered by CSIRO scientists and Education Outreach program facilitators.
Sarah is hoping to pursue a career in marine medicine or medical research.

House pride soars at Swimming Carnival
On Friday 21st February, our students enjoyed our annual Swimming Carnival at the Proserpine Memorial Swimming Pool. It was an ocean of blue, green, red and yellow combined with oodles of enthusiasm as our Houses showed off their spirit with their colourful outfits and loud war cries.
The higher levels of participation in B Division, was led by our wonderful Year 12s, with nearly the entire cohort having a splash in the pool. Interestingly, the scores were reasonably close all day with Cook, Flinders, Kennedy and Oxley Houses battling it out across A and B Divisions in both individual and relay events.
Kennedy were more like dolphins than kangaroos, coming away with the win on 610 points, with Flinders extremely close in second on 582 points, Oxley third on 419 points and Cook floating in fourth with 343 points.
Despite the weather, there was house spirit galore, with many students dressing up in their team colours and slip, slop, slapping on their hats, shirts, sunscreen and coloured zinc. The sun safety tent was busy all day with many students taking advantage of the free sunscreen and scoring sun safety points for their house!
Congratulations to all Age Champions and well done to all who participated on the day and who ‘just kept swimming’ and scored points for their house!

Netballers head north for regional trials
Our netball season commenced swiftly this year with selected Proserpine State High school students taking the opportunity to trial at the Whitsunday Netball Trials in Week 3 in Bowen. The Under 15 trial included 47 girls of which 10 were named in the team. This trial demonstrated a very high level of skill and one of the best selectors have seen over time. A huge congratulations to Nara Suckling, Elyse Peterson, Maali Bradley on making the Under 15 Whitsunday Schools team and Mia Dean on selection in the Under 19 team.
These girls travelled to Townsville to the Northern Regional trials last week proudly representing the Whitsunday region. Team coaches Sherelle Shields and Jacqui Smith were extremely impressed by the effort, skills, and sportsmanship the girls demonstrated at a very competitive level. Congratulations to Nara Suckling who made the top 20 Possibles vs Probable's match in contention for the Northern team. The growth in Whitsunday school netball is very exciting and we congratulate all students participating at these trials.
School netball continues this term with netball on in our Multi Purpose Hall every Tuesday and Friday lunch break. A new focus now turns to forming Junior and Senior teams for the upcoming Vicki Wilson Cup in Term 2.
Skills put to the test at Basketball competition
Seven of our Year 12 boys represented our school at the Molten Champion Basketball School of Queensland Competition in Townsville this week. Our students competed over 2 days and were led by our North Queensland Basketball representatives Liam Steen and Chaz Calder. Liam impressed on the court being one of the competition's highest scorers out of the many teams competing.
Well done to all of our students, with some having never competed in a basketball tournament before and improving leaps and bounds with their skill set. Thank you to Adam Philipson who travelled and prepared our students for the competition.

Scoliosis detection
How to detect Scoliosis - Information for adolescents aged 10-14 years and their parents
What is scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a lateral or sideways curve of the spine. The spine also rotates on its long axis as it curves. The age range when scoliosis first appears can be different for girls and boys because boys tend to start their adolescent growth spurt a bit later. It usually develops during early adolescence (age 10-12 years for girls, or 12-14 years for boys) when growth is most rapid.
How do you detect scoliosis? Simply look for it! It only takes 30 seconds.
Please see the below fact sheet link for more information about detection in your child.
