Welcome Back!
Welcome to the beginning of an exciting school year in 2025! I hope everyone had a productive break and is now ready for the challenges and opportunities ahead. This year, we have a wide range of learning, extracurricular, and leadership activities available for students to engage with. I have encouraged students on assembly to challenge themselves across these three areas throughout the year, starting Term 1!
A warm welcome to all Year 7 students and new students across all year levels joining us in 2025. Our school fosters a safe and supportive environment, and we are committed to ensuring a smooth transition to Proserpine State High School. I encourage parents to reach out if we can further support your child with the start of the new school year.
I extend my gratitude to the entire school community for your patience and cooperation during the recent weather disruptions in our first week back. Although we had to postpone our Leadership Induction Ceremony, I am pleased to announce that it has been rescheduled for Monday, 10th February.
While our school experienced some interruptions, I extend my thoughts and best wishes to the school communities in North Queensland that have been adversely affected by recent flooding. We wish them a speedy recovery and a smooth return to school for their students.
Positive Culture Day
We started the school year with Positive Culture Day, emphasising our House spirit and the strong traditions of our Care Group structure. Fostering a sense of belonging and connection among our students remains a priority, and welcoming new students into their House is an integral part of this occasion. Throughout the year, students will have opportunities to participate in a variety of activities through our House Cup Program, enhancing both their engagement and school spirit.

School Communication
As Principal, I advocate for proactive communication between home and school, encouraging parents and students to share ideas that can enhance our school community. Whether it’s addressing concerns, celebrating achievements, or discussing school matters, I invite you to connect with us through face-to-face appointments, phone calls, or emails to the appropriate staff members. For general inquiries, please reach out to principal@proserpineshs.eq.edu.au or contact our school Administration Office at 4945 0111 for assistance. Other communication options include QParents or the SZ app.
Parents and caregivers, I urge you to introduce yourselves to your child’s teacher early this term and share any specific needs your child may have. Your partnership in enhancing their learning outcomes through open communication is invaluable and greatly appreciated. Below is an outline of our staff available to assist parents in ensuring smooth lines of communication and student support in these early weeks of the school year.

Senior eating area extention
We pass on our gratitude to our Parents and Citizens Association for their generous contribution to have our Senior Eating Area extended over the Christmas school holiday period.
The extension is a terrific addition to the senior area for our students who are enjoying the extra space to eat lunch and socialise with their friends.
Outstanding Student Achievements
I would like to highlight some recent student achievements we have celebrated. Through the commitment of our Senior School Team, teachers, and support staff, we are proud to announce a 100% QCE completion rate for the graduating class of 2024. This achievement reflects the dedication and perseverance of our students and staff working together.
Australia Day Awards
Finally, a massive congratulations to all members of our school Seagrass Theatre and Music Company on receiving the Australia Day Arts and Cultural Award. Our school community is immensely proud of your achievements and the recognition of your outstanding production of 'Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat'. I am sure audience members would agree that the performances were spectacular. What is even more impressive is that every element of the production was led by students. Once again, congratulations on this well-deserved recognition.
What year did you graduate?
2006
What were your senior subjects at PSHS?
Maths A, Business Communication and Technologies, Hospitality, English – I also completed a School-Based Traineeship in Tourism and Obtained my Certificate 3 in Tourism Operations.
Where did life take you after you graduated?
When I left school I went straight into a job as a Property Manager Assistant in Airlie Beach. I was there for 6 months, before moving to the Gold Coast to complete my Real Estate Licence and continued to work as a Property Manager Assistant while studying. Once I had completed my course I moved back to Airlie Beach where I was in Real Estate for 7 Years.
What job position are you currently in?
I am now involved in the Sugar Cane Industry. I am self-employed but I wear many different hats within the industry that are all linked together. My husband and I have our own sugar cane farm north of Proserpine, so I help out in the paddock and keep our bookwork and accounts in order. I also work with LOS Harvesting doing the accounts and daily running of the business. I am also a Director on the local Canegrowers Proserpine Board.

I obtained my Real Estate Licence for my job as a Property Manager and have completed a lot of training and courses to keep my skills up-to-date. There is always something new to learn.
I recently completed a 6-month mentoring program through Canegrowers. What a great experience! It was lovely to meet some like-minded people who want to grow their skills and knowledge within the industry. It was such a fantastic program.
Best experience since graduating at PSHS?
The best experience has been the lifelong friends I made in at school, and now watching us all build and grow our own businesses and careers. It's great we are all still in contact, and in some cases, work alongside each other in different industries.
Best advice for current Year 12 students?
All those little moments when you think "We won’t need this when we leave school" turn out that yes, generally, you will need those little life skills at some point. Also, be kind to your teachers. One day you will run into them in the community and may work or socialise with them.
Hi! My name is Ryan Prior, and I’m thrilled to be joining the Prossie High team as the new Science and Mathematics teacher.
I’m looking forward to an exciting year ahead and can’t wait to inspire our students to explore the wonders of Science and Math!
Welcome from our eLearning Team
As we start a new school year, we ask students in our BYOD eLearning program to return their BYOD agreement form and payment to our Adminstration Office so they can be reconnected to the network, internet and printers. Students should be able to connect one to two days after forms and payment have been received by the office. Students will need to download the ‘Intune’ program at home prior to connection. This will allow the BYOD device access to our school Wi-Fi and the resources it provides. Instructions on this process can be found at our Resource Centre or on our school website.
It is vital all students in either eLearning program listen to morning notices and check the lists at the Resource Centre for when devices are issued or connected so they can be collected.
There are limited resources for students not in the CYOD/BYOD eLearning program. It cannot be guaranteed a laptop will be available for use in the classroom. Please consider joining the eLearning program to support your child’s learning. If there are financial constraints, a bursary can be applied for by contacting our Administration Office. Information regarding our school’s eLearning program can be found on our school website under the eLearning tab. The first CYOD order for 2025 will close on Friday, 7th of February. Another order is scheduled for the end of Term 1.
Our Year 7 students will be involved in induction workshops this term and ICT skilling will occur in students’ Digital Literacy classes. It is anticipated students in the CYOD program will receive their devices in Week 4. For a Year 7 CYOD student to be issued their device, full payment must be received prior to issue. It is likely Year 7 students in the BYOD program will be connected to the school network, printers and internet in Week 3 in readiness for use in the classroom in Week 4. Students should listen to morning notices for these arrangements.
Laptops are provided primarily for educational purposes as they are a learning tool. While some personal use is acceptable, the main guideline for use is under teacher’s instruction or parent/guardians’ permission ensuring compliance with the conditions of our school's Computer Network Agreement and Student Use Agreement. Please take some time to decide how you wish to manage the use of this device in your home and discuss these expectations with your child.
All students need to pay particular attention to the care and treatment of their school bag as well as others’ belongings. Every student must assume each bag contains a device and must act responsibly at all times. Laptops/school bags should never be left unattended.
For parent or student enquiries, the following people can be contacted:
General enquiries: Leisa Telford - ltelf5@eq.edu.au
Finance enquiries: Tanya Chapman - tchap192@eq.edu.au
Technical assistance: Technical Support Staff based in the Resource Centre before school and at lunchtimes
Overall program enquiries: Mickayla Dargusch - mdarg0@eq.edu.au
A Handy Tip: Keep a plastic shopping bag in the school backpack. This can be used to cover and protect the laptop/case from water if caught in seasonal weather!
Year 12 SET Plan Reviews
The SET Plan process is a key component of our school’s Career Education Program. SET Plans are required to be reviewed and revised at various stages throughout Years 11 and 12 to ensure students remain on track for success in Senior Secondary and meaningful post-school pathways.
It is a Departmental requirement that communication of student learning plans and proposed post-school pathways are documented in the SET Plan which is signed off by parents/carers and a school representative. Students and parents/carers will engage in a 20-minute personal interview with a member of staff to review students’ academic progress at this vital juncture to ensure they are on track for QCE/QCIA attainment and a positive transition to post-school pathways.
In order to allow our school to facilitate these important interviews for more than 150 students, Year 12 classes for Tuesday 11th February will be closed.
The booking of interviews is to be completed through SOBS our online booking system, and are now open. Bookings will close at 12:00pm on Friday 7th of February.
Should you be unable to make an interview time on Tuesday 11th of February please contact our school on 4945 0111 to book an alternative interview time.
If you haven't registered for QParents or are having difficulties providing 100 points ID, feel free to bring along your identification documents and we can sign you up on the day.

2025 School Sports
The start of every year is always a busy time for school sports. It is important that students get themselves organised early. They must listen to morning notices and attend all meetings and trainings for their sport. Meetings will be held for sign ups and distribution of forms and information as per these notices. If students miss the initial meeting then they have 2 days to see Mr Smith or Mr Cox in the SLC Staffroom to sign up. Training and trials for school teams will be held and students must attend these or notify their coach. If they don’t, they won’t be considered for selection.
Any digital or paper copy consent forms and excursion fees required for their sport must be returned to the office by the due date on the form (usually one week prior to the trial taking place) as numbers for buses and selections must be finalised based on these returns. Failure to meet these requirements will result in the student missing out on the trials or school team. Any questions in regards to Whitsunday or North Queensland Sports Trials, please call either Mr Smith or Mr Cox on 4945 0145.
School Swimming Carnival: Friday 21st February
School Cross Country: Tuesday 6th May
Care Carnival: Friday 13th June
Athletics Carnival: Wednesday 30th July
Please Note: Students turning 12 this year (2013 born) are attached to the 10-12 years trials.
Bus Times
Whitsunday Trial buses leave Proserpine State High School at 11am and return by 3pm for clusters in Bowen.
North Queensland Trial buses depart 5:30am from Airlie Beach and 6:00am from Proserpine State High School. Their return is normally 6:00pm-6.30pm dependant on trials running on time.
Work Experience
Work Experience is an excellent opportunity to gain an understanding of the industry that a student is considering for a career and assist with the transition from school to work. Valuable industry contacts can be made, added to a resume, or the experience used as a pre-requisite for further study. It allows students to see the nature and diversity of employees in the workplace and the ability to improve work ethic, maturity, confidence and self-reliance. It can also be the opportunity to extend learning in the classroom into practical applications in the workforce.
A number of industries have work experience opportunities available over the school holiday period. If your child is interested, they can collect an application forms from B4.

Industry Events
Keep a look out for our 2025 industry events.
If you are interested in being a stall holder at any of these events, please email myself – bport82@eq.edu.au.
Late last year we became both a Health Gateway School and Hospitality and Tourism Gateway School. We are excited to host our first event this month, the Healthcare Career Pathway Event, where we will have healthcare professionals showcase their industry to local students from across the Whitsundays.
We also look forward to being able to offer students opportunities including micro credentials, excursions, webinars and access to industry. Watch this space!
Student Opportunities
Senior School students will receive their first Student Opportunities email for the year. These opportunities are emailed to students every week until we launch our exciting new Industry communications platform.
These Student Opportunity emails also include information and opportunities about:
- Work experience;
- Apprenticeships and traineeships – full-time and school-based;
- Save the dates;
- Casual and full-time employment;
- Training and career pathway sessions;
- Scholarship and open day information – there are many university webinars at the moment, be sure to check out their websites to register or check your emails for the links.
Please encourage your child to visit B4 for more information on the positions available, school-based traineeships & apprenticeships, or work experience opportunities.
Link and Launch
A huge congratulations to our 2024 Graduates – what an outstanding achievement!
I hope your graduate has been enjoying the summer break. I know that some of our graduates have found themselves already trekking onto their next pathway.
If your graduate is yet to find their next step and they would like some assistance to transition into study or work, Link and Launch can help.
I would love to have a chat and see if I can support our graduate towards their next goal and search through their options together.

Mission Statement
Our Proserpine State High School Student Advisory Centre supports and embraces students social, emotional, physical, cultural, wellbeing and diversity with an inclusive, non-judgemental strength-based approach.
Our Student Advisory Centre forms partnerships with students, staff, families and the wider community to empower positive life choices at school and beyond.
Student Welfare
Along with academic success, the well-being of all students is something we value highly at Proserpine State High School. We believe that the mental health and wellbeing of all students is a key foundation for school success.
Our Student Support Team work with students individually and in classes or groups on a whole range of issues relating to wellbeing. This can include stress, friendship, peer pressure, bullying and any other matters relating to mental health and social/emotional wellbeing.
We encourage parents and carers to contact our team if they have concerns or require support for their child, or would simply like further information on topics relating to student well-being. Students can also self-refer to our services. Appointments can be made through our school Adminstration Office.
Student Support Staff invest great effort and resources to create a positive and welcoming school environment for every student and to assist each student as best they can with whatever concerns they’re experiencing. However, there will be times when services outside of our school are recommended, particularly when a specific expertise is needed or the student would prefer to seek assistance from someone outside of the school. In such situations, the relevant staff will work with families and external services to ensure the best outcome for the student.
Our Student Support Services Team are located in the Student Advisory Centre next to our school Adminstration Office on Ruge Street.
Health Matters
Hi Everyone!
I’m Karen Dachs, the Proserpine State High School, School-Based Youth Health Nurse (SBYHN). I can be found in the Student Advisory Centre (SAC) on Monday, Tuesday and alternating Wednesdays. Please feel free to call me on (07) 4945 0112 if you have any queries.
An outline of what I do
The SBYHN works with students and our school community on issues that may affect the health and wellbeing of young people and the school community as a whole. This includes helping with curriculum, teaching and learning activities, providing health information and referral, supporting the development of the environment and school culture that supports health and wellbeing, and working with the community and other services.
The SBYHN can provide health and wellbeing information about:
- healthy eating and physical activity
- feeling unhappy or stressed
- relationships
- healthy skin
- personal and family problems
- growth and development
- sexual health
- smoking, alcohol and other drugs.
Confidentiality
Young people have a right to confidentiality when accessing health services. As a health service provider the SBYHN respects this but there are some things the nurse must refer or act upon.
In most cases, it is best for young people to talk to their parents about health and wellbeing issues. I can support young people to do this.
Getting the best help for health
At times other services can provide more appropriate or further help or support for young people. The SBYHN will discuss the options for working with other services or linking young people with the right services.
The SBYHN does not provide
- treatment such as medications, injections, first aid
- physical examinations
- ongoing counselling for psychological problems.
Student appointments can be made to see me before or after school, or during breaks.

Yarning Circle
Week 1
Hello Year 7 parents and carers, my name is Arthur Gabey, and I am a descendent of the Gia/Gyia and Ngaro Aboriginal People and Zagareb People of Murry (Mer) Island in the Torres Straits. I’m the Community Education Counsellor (CEC) here at Proserpine State High School and can be found at the Student Advisory Centre (SAC). My main focus is working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to reach their full academic potential and attendance rate at school. I'm looking forward to 2025 and building a positive relationship and partnership with all families.
Deadly Choices Program
This year, the Deadly Choices Program will be running an additional program in collaboration with the Mackay Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Health Service (MATSICHS) team who will be running a cooking program for any interested First Nations senior students.
Ex-Mackay Cutters Rugby League player Corbyn Tass will be mentoring our seniors while, Mackay Hospital and Health Service Deadly Choices team member Chris Viti will be supervising our juniors. It is very exciting having two programs starting at our school next week and encourage students to engage with both programs.
More details and information will be sent to parents and carers in the coming week.
SENIOR ATSIAP Program
Our senior students are invited to participate in the 2025 ATSIAP Challenge. This is a team event where our students are given a topic two weeks prior to the closing date whereby they must create an original speech, poem, and art of their chosen topic. Each entry must be filmed, with students presenting their work that will be marked by a panel against pieces created by students from schools in North Queensland. If our school is successful, our students will compete in the Senior ATSIAP State Challenge. If your child is interested, can they please come and see me at the SAC this week and next.

Canteen Convenors:
Karen Muller has worked in the canteen for 6 years. Karen's last daughter is in Year 11.

Clare McKenzie joined us two years ago and has 2 boys who are past students.

More volunteers are needed this year to cope with the growing number of students and staff. If you could kindly donate two hours of your time just once a month you would be providing enormous benefits to your child’s school. All profits from our canteen go directly to improving our school.
We would love to see more new faces at the canteen and we have places on our roster if you would like to come in and join us for a couple of hours a month.
Please fill out the CANTEEN Volunteer Application Form (tab on the left-hand side panel of this newsletter), leave your name and number at the school office or ring the canteen ladies on 4945 0119.

Up-Date Your Contact Records
- Parents, have you changed your address, phone number, email address, etc.?
-
Parents, have you changed jobs recently?
- Parents, has your son/daughter’s medical details changed?
It is most important that changes to your contact records are correct as the Transport and Main Roads (TMR) have changed the Process of Student Verification for the School Transport Assistance Scheme (STAS).
From now on the process will be completed electronically with details held in TMR’s state-wide database being matched with data from OneSchool (our school records). The onerous task of checking large paper based reports has now been discontinued. If these records are not up-to-date your school transport assistance will be cancelled in cases where details held by TMR do not match student information held in OneSchool.
Please advise the school of any changes, not only for bus travel but also in case your student becomes unwell or they have an emergency situation.
How to update your records:
Return to the beginning of the newsletter and in the left side bar under ‘Forms & Documents’, print out the appropriate form/s (Change of Details Form or Medical Changed Details Forms), fill in the form/s and then return it/them to our Adminstration Office or send the forms via email to principal@proserpineshs.eq.edu.au. You are also welcome to call into our office to have the changes made on the spot.
Medication at School
Any prescription medication should be left at the office after the Request to Administer Medication at School Form has been completed by the parent or guardian. The medication must be in the original container provided by the doctor, dentist or optometrist, not a pharmacist, and have clear details or instructions indicating dosage and times. The permission form is valid for one week only, unless there is a permanent medication where special negotiation will take place.
Parents please note that non-script items such as Panadol can be stored in the student’s own school bag and taken as required. Non-script items are not kept at the office.
Once the Request to Administer Medication at School Form has been completed and if there is a change to any previous medication subscribed then a Medical Changed Details Form in the left side bar under ‘Forms & Documents’ can be filled out and dropped into the school.
Reminder for 2024 resource returns
All text books, library books and other resources from 2024 must be returned to the Resource Centre with an accompanying note clearly indicating the name of the returning student. It is vital that every effort is made to return the resources booked out to your student from last year so that you do not receive an invoice for outstanding items. These unreturned resources are depriving other students of their use in 2025.
