Term 3 has got off to a busy yet exciting start with a magnitude of activities occurring across our school calendar.
NAIDOC Week celebrations
I firstly commend our staff and students for their engagement with our NAIDOC Week celebrations. It was great to see such a range of opportunities for students to experience and share knowledge of First Nations stories and traditions. Celebrating NAIDOC Week acknowledges and honours the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Our activities provided an opportunity for understanding and respect, fostering a strong sense of community within our school.
I would like to thank in particular Mr Gabey, Mrs McDonald and Mrs O’Keefe for their organisation and coordination of the week-long program. I would also like to extend my appreciation to Mr Kapitz for his organisation of our AFL House Challenge.

Alumni welcomed back to school
We recently had the privilege of welcoming back former graduates to speak with our Year 11 and 12 students. These alumni shared their diverse pathways from school to tertiary studies and into the workforce, which was not only inspiring but also incredibly informative. Our senior students engaged with the speakers, asking insightful questions and taking on the feedback and advice provided.
This interaction gave our students a valuable opportunity to gain first-hand insights into various career and study options, helping them to navigate their future choices more confidently. Our thanks extend to the following alumni for their time and ongoing commitment to our school – Imogen Tulk, Jack Handley, Grace McDonald and Sam Rogers. Thank you also to Mrs Porter for organising the event.
-
Imogen Tulk – Bachelor of Arts (Criminology), now a youth social worker in a youth detention centre.
-
Jack Handley – Bachelor of Education, now teaching in Townsville.
-
Grace McDonald – Double Degree in Agricultural Science (Animal Science major) and Agribusiness, now a Graduate Agronomist with Elders.
-
Sam Rogers – Started studying Space and Mechatronic Engineering at the University of Sydney, which he has put on hold to pursue an exciting entrepreneurship venture.
Behaviour and Effort Awards
At Proserpine State High School, we are proud to recognise and celebrate our students who demonstrate a strong commitment to learning through our Behaviour and Effort Awards. These awards highlight not only academic dedication but also positive attitudes, perseverance, and the drive to achieve personal bests.
Gold Behaviour and Effort Awards were presented during whole school parade, with Silver to be presented at Year Level Parade and Bronze awardees recognised in Care Group. These recognitions reflect our school’s focus on encouraging students to engage fully in their learning and to strive towards their potential.
Our recent Behaviour and Effort Awards have placed particular emphasis on recognising outstanding attitudes to learning in the classroom and students who have demonstrated a genuine commitment to improvement. We believe that effort and attitude are key priorities of success, and we are proud to present certificates of recognition to those who model these values daily.
Congratulations to all Gold, Silver, and Bronze recipients. Their achievements are a reflection of hard work and focus on reaching their potential. They are positive role models that may inspire others across our school to make the most of every learning opportunity and continue working towards their goals.
We look forward to acknowledging more excellence as the year progresses. A full gallery of awardees and list of names appears in our Year Level Coordinator section below.
Japanese sister school visitors have arrived
We are thrilled to announce the arrival of our international visitors from Asaka Nishi High School. Hosting students from our sister school is a great honour, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to Miss Macnamara and Mrs Raiteri for organising this enriching opportunity. We also want to express our gratitude to our host students and their families for their generosity in making this experience possible.
Cultural exchanges provide numerous benefits for everyone involved. By sharing our diverse backgrounds, we gain greater understanding and appreciation of different cultures, creating a more inclusive and connected community. These interactions allow our students to broaden their perspectives, enhance their global awareness, and respect for others. As well, engaging with peers from different countries builds life-lasting friendships, and creates memorable experiences that contribute to personal growth.

Athletics Carnival

On an overall note, I congratulate all students in attendance for their conduct and spirit on the day. Well done!

School Opinion Survey now open
Parent engagement
It was wonderful to see so many parents and students attend our recent Subject Selection Evening for our current Year 9 and Year 10 students. This time of year is crucial for these students as they navigate important decisions regarding their senior schooling. If any families need further advice on our wide selection of subjects or pathways beyond school, our Senior Schooling Team is here to assist.

Two important events for our Year 9 and Year 10 students are fast approaching: the Year 9 Success Into Senior (JET Planning) and Year 10 SET Planning sessions. These meetings are student-centered and designed to promote a smooth transition from Junior to Senior School.
Engaging in JET planning is a crucial process. It’s important that decisions regarding student subject choices are well-informed decisions when heading into Year 10. The foundation set in Year 10 will be crucial for selecting the right subjects in Year 11, leading to greater student success in the future.
Our Year 10 SET Plan meetings are a key point of communication between students, parents/caregivers, and our school. These meetings assist in selecting successful pathways for Years 11 and 12, and explore additional options such as external courses, TAFE, and School-Based Traineeships and Apprenticeships.
Important Dates:
- Year 9 JET Plan Interviews - Friday 29th August
- Year 10 SET Plan Interviews - Tuesday 2nd September
Students excel in extracurricular Activities
Congratulations to all of our junior and senior students who competed in the first round of Inter-school Debating last Tuesday. You all did a fantastic job representing our school. A special congratulations to the teams who made it to the semi-finals and won overall. Thank you to Ms Foot and staff for coordinating this great event for our local youth.
Finally, I wish our Seagrass Theatre and Music Company students the best of luck for their Musical Theatre Night next Friday 15th August in our Performing Arts Centre. We know you have been rehearsing for many months, and we look forward to watching you perform on stage. Students and staff are encouraged to support this terrific cultural event.
Thank you to everyone who continues to make Proserpine State High School an exciting and supportive school community.
From Our Year Level Coordinators
Well deserved Behaviour and Effort recognition
Congratulations to our Year 7-9 students who were presented with their Gold Behaviour and Effort Awards for excellence in Term 2 on whole school parade on Monday. Our Silver recipients will be awarded on Year Level Parades, while our Bronze recipients will receive theirs in Care Group. What a great achievement for your hard work in Semester 1.

History books re-written at Athletics Carnival
Our annual school Athletics Carnival was held last Wednesday 30th July with enthusiastic participation from students. There were excellent numbers participating for all houses in the U13, U14 and Open age divisions in all events. The place ribbons were keenly contested, with students proudly displaying their spoils for first, second and third on their shirts, shorts, hats, plaits and pony tails.
There were some exceptional performances including Pania Corowa throwing 32.50m in Javelin to get within 4m of Susan Madeo's 1990 record. There was a number of new records set in distance events with our current crop of girls distance runners breaking four long standing records. Peppa Geisel became the first female athlete of any age at Proserpine State High School to break the five minute barrier for the 1500m, setting a new record with four minutes 59.4 seconds. This broke Emma Stubbs’ 2004 record of five minutes 06.2 seconds.
Shailee Mewha looks set to rewrite the distance record books after her debut year in the Under 13-Years Girls division. Shailee set new records in all distance events. Her two minutes 25.42 seconds would have broken every Girls 800m in the school as well as Heidi Moore’s 2013 time of two minutes 39.97 seconds. Shailee also smashed both of Kasey Hogan’s 1500m and 3000m records during the pre-carnival lunchtime events. Shailee ran five minutes 04.56 seconds to break the old mark by 29 seconds and run the second fastest girls 1500m behind Peppa. Her 3000m time of 10 minutes 54.22 seconds broke the old record by nearly two minutes. Both Shailee and Peppa are excelling in middle and long distance running due their dedication and training. Well done girls!
Our perpetual House Shield was this year won by Kennedy House (1157 points) successfully defeating last year's champions Oxley by 6 points, while Flinders ((972) were third and Cook (913) placed fourth. The best all-rounder was awarded to our student who personally accumulates the most points across all age groups and was proudly presented to Cassius McLeod with 75 points.

Congratulations to all those who attended, participated and showed great House spirit on the day. Congratulations to our athletes who competed for both team and individual honours of personal bests, records and age champions. Congratulations to all age champions below.

Whitsunday Athletics Carnival coming up
Any students who finished first or second in any events qualify to represent our school at the Whitsunday Athletics Carnival here on Thursday 14th August. A meeting was held on Thursday for these students to collect their forms and return them and the trial fee to our Administration Office if they would like to compete. If your child has not collected a form and wishes to participate they can collect one from the SLC Staffroom.
The Whitsunday Carnival acts as a trial to qualify for North Queensland Athletics Trials. Any students who finish first in Track events (100, 200, 400, 800m) qualify and second place will have their best time nominated. Students who finish first or second in Field and Distance events (1500m, 3000m and 5000m) qualify to attend NQ Trials. The NQ Athletics Trials will be held in Townsville on Thursday 4th September.
Any students wanting any training during lunchtimes or after school can see Mr Cox or our HPE staff to organise a suitable time.
Science Week is coming up!
RYDA Program delivers road safety message
On Friday 25th July, Year 10 students at Proserpine State High School participated in the award winning RYDA program. A road safety program that promotes introspection into their choices around road and driver safety. Our students engaged in a range of sessions that provided opportunities to reflect on driver choices and targeted strategies about how to keep themselves and others safe both behind the wheel and as passengers in a car.
Year 12 Marine Science simulate stock populations
Students in Year 12 Marine Science are currently working on their final unit before external exams where the focus is on Fisheries Management.
Part of this study includes investigating different stock management calculations to estimate marine populations.
Students investigated the limitations of the Lincoln index (the capture/recapture) method through simulating longline fishing and are investigating the impacts of overfishing on stock management through cost per unit effort (CPUE).
Students cast their skills in Aquatic fishing unit
Our Year 12 Aquatic Practices students have been learning to throw cast nets as part of their Recreational and Commercial Fishing Unit this term. Students are taught two different ways to cast to give them ample opportunity to perfect their technique. This will then lead into a base practice session where they complete an experiment to throw the nets 1m, 2m and 3m away from themselves, measuring net spread through diameter in two opposing directions. It's been great watching students help each other with learning this life skill. Keep up the great work!
Sweet success on the horizon for Ag class

Local businesses inspire Hospitality students
On Monday and Tuesday last week, our Year 11 Hospitality classes ventured out of the classroom to visit two local cafes. As part of their Casual Dining Unit, students visited Little Vintage Café and Healthy Haven Café. Whilst there, students completed observations with a focus on Front of House service as well as the types of menu items on offer. Students were able to order for themselves, enjoying the spoils of these local businesses. These visits also provided added depth to their upcoming assessment where students will create a "café style” food for their teachers.
Thank you Mrs Telford and Mrs Gordon for assisting us on these excursions. A very special thank you to Little Vintage Café and Healthy Haven Café for welcoming us and supporting our students to experience a café setting.

- Jack Oberg placed 29th in the Under-13 Division.
- Peppa Geisel placed 13th in the 15-Years Girls division.
- Millie Groom finished third in the 15-Years Girls Division receiving a bronze medal.
- Shailee Mewha competed in the 13-years 3km event placing fourth.

Our Year 10 student Will Marshall was recognised on whole school parade for his impressive hat trick at the recent Mackay Cricket Gala Day earlier this term.
Mr Cox proudly presented Will with a signed ball as a memento to mark the occasion.
Well done Will! Keep up the great bowling!
Sarah shares youth voice at CSIRO Council meeting
Our Year 9 student Sarah Hart has been advocating for Australian youth at the CSIRO Education and Outreach monthly meetings on behalf of the 2025 CSIRO Youth Reference Council.
The Council is coordinated by CSIRO's STEM Together program and Sarah has been an enthusiastic and active member taking on several roles across the Council meetings, and actively sharing her perspectives with those who seek Council input.
CSIRO STEM Together Project Lead Gemma Reid said they are delighted that Sarah has agreed to report Council activities at the Education and Outreach virtual meetings.
This is the inaugural year the CSIRO has established the Youth Reference Council that includes eight high school students from across Australia. Sarah was invited to apply after taking part in the CSIRO Future Shapers Program last year.
"Our mission is to provide youth insights from rural and underrepresented groups across Australia," Sarah said.
"Projects we have worked on so far included choosing from a variety of projects for the CSIRO to launch this year for National Science Week. We ended up choosing the Wild Watch experiment which has now launched."
The Youth Council continue to meet every three months and are now working on making STEM more diverse for under represented groups.
"I feel like adults in the STEM field need a student voice and I feel like they appreciate our opinions and love sharing their research with us," said Sarah.
Keep up the great work!

Year 12 students boost law skills at Mooting comp
Last term our Year 12 students Thalia Foster, Zachary Gould and Callum Henry competed in the National Bond University Mooting Competition. They stepped into the shoes of solicitors, testing their advocacy skills in a real courtroom environment. The experience was both challenging and inspiring, as students engaged with complex legal issues and presented arguments before experienced university lecturers and practicing barristers. Our team demonstrated confidence, clarity and composure throughout and the valuable experience not only deepened their understanding of the law but boosted their confidence in public speaking. Congratulations to you all on engaging with this opportunity!Student voice shared at Inter-school Debating
Community spirit shines at annual Reef Festival
We are thrilled to share the outstanding achievements of our talented students who exhibited their works in the Reeflections Art Competition, held last week at The Heart Hotel Airlie Beach as part of the Great Barrer Reef Festival.
Lily Smith (Year 10), Natalie Cooper (Year 11) and Ivy Thompson (Year 12) all exhibited original artworks that explores ideas and themes about the reef. The competition was judged by Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Ry Collins who awarded:
- First Place: Lily Smith -$300
- Second Place: Lily Smith -$150
- Third Place: Ivy Thompson -$50
All three students also won an accommodation package from the hotel to enjoy with their families.
This is the first year a student exhibition has been on offer in conjunction with the Reef Festival and although it was only a small event, we would like to thank The Heart Hotel for giving our students this opportunity and hope that it will be bigger and better next year.
Events like this not only highlight the artistic strengths of our students but also build confidence, allow for peer inspiration, and foster a supportive creative community within our school.
We encourage all students to keep exploring their artistic voices and look forward to seeing even more incredible work in next year’s competition! Congratulations Lily, Ivy and Natalie on your wonderful efforts!

Students immerse themselves at JCU Summit
Six of our Year 10 students took part in the James Cook University Navigate You Summit over the recent school holidays. The inaugural 5-day immersive program was a live-in opportunity for our students to experience university life, inform career goals, develop self-confidence and build cpacity for tertiary study after graduation. Below are two student accounts of the experience.
I had an incredible week-long experience at the Townsville James Cook University campus. The lessons were engaging and opened my eyes to different study areas that I had never really thought about or knew were on offer. I also really enjoyed the extracurricular activities like the drumming circle disco and graduation dinner. If anything like this came around again I would jump at the opportunity. This opportunity has helped me get a better understanding of university life and what my future may look like.
- Written by Lily Smith
The JCU Navigate YOU Summit was not where I saw myself these holidays but I am very grateful that I attended. Being able to make new friends from the North Queensland region and work with industry professionals, lecturers and uni students was the most rewarding part of the program. We had an absolute blast and learnt so much at the same time.

Pop-up coffee cart a hit at Athletics Carnival
Staff and students were treated to delicious hot drinks at our Coffee Cart on Athletics Day, along with sweet treats made by our Year 11 Hospitality students. Feedback was positive and smiles a plenty - especially from well-deserving teachers who loved their caffeine hit!
Students ran this pop-up business with minimal support from Mrs Linneweber, really taking the reigns of all that was required on the day. Not all students were Senior Hospitality students, some simply showed an interest in contributing and volunteering their time. Thank you to our students who were instrumental in making this a success at our Athletics Day, your time and skills were greatly appreciated by many.
Leos lend a hand at school celebration
Our Whitsunday Leos Club students joined forces with the Proserpine Lions Club to serve tasty burgers at St Catherine's Catholic College's 100 year celebrations last weekend. Well done to you all for donating your time and thank you to those who made a purchase.

Special Report - Sibling Relationships
Sibling relationships are often a child's first and longest-lasting social connection. These bonds can offer companionship, support and opportunities to develop important life skills such as empathy, negotiation and conflict resolution. However, like all close relationships, sibling dynamics can be complex. Differences in temperament, age, needs and parental attention can all contribute to tension or rivalry. It's not uncommon for children to compete for attention, especially during times of change or stress.
As a parent or caregiver, your role in shaping the tone of sibling relationships is vital. Creating a home environment that celebrates each child's unique strengths and avoids direct comparisons helps reduce rivalry and fosters mutual respect.
By listening without judgement, teaching emotional regulation, and supporting each child's individuality, you can create a family culture where siblings feel secure and valued. This edition of SchoolTV offers insights to support young people in developing positive, lasting sibling bonds that can remain strong well into adulthood.
Here is the link to the sibling edition.
