From Our Classrooms

Welcome our exchange student Sara!

This year we are excited to welcome Sara Glutz as an exchange student at our school. Sara has travelled from Switzerland to live and study in the Whitsundays for the next year. Read below how she has settled in so far.

Where in Switzerland are you from? I'm from a small town called Chur in the mountains. We do a lot of skiing.
What made you decide to do an exchange in Australia? My cousin did an exchange to the Netherlands and inspired me to give it a try. I haven't done an exchange before.
How have you found your time in Australia so far? It is very nice here. I am enjoying the weather. It is very beautiful, I am living in Cannonvale and am enjoying being close to the ocean.
What are you looking forward to most with your exchange? I am looking forward to all of the new experiences like Christmas here. School is a lot easier here and I am looking forward to meeting new people and making new friends.
What advice do you have for students interested in taking part in an exchange? Even though I have only been here a week I think it is a good idea. You learn a lot about yourself. It is a good experience that has been hard at the start but that will become better.

Learning brought to life for Legal Studies students

10_Legal_Excursion_Term_3.jpg

Our Year 10 Legal Studies students recently had the valuable opportunity to visit the Mackay District Courthouse, gaining first-hand insight into Queensland’s legal system in action.

Students observed real court proceedings, and explored the roles of the judge, lawyers, and court staff. The visit brought classroom learning to life, deepening their understanding of court procedures, trial processes, and the importance of justice in our community.

PEO_webinar_2.jpg

Our Year 12 Legal Studies students recently participated in a live webinar from the Parliamentary Education Office in Canberra on the topic of Power and the People: Australia’s Constitution. This was an opportunity for our students to engage in meaningful discussions and information sharing from Parliament House, directly relating to their current unit of work covering governance in Australia.

Students reflected later that although they already knew some of the information shared by the Parliamentary Education Officer, it was an opportunity to refresh their memory and relate it to the current Parliament, and reflect on issues relating to governance that are both relevant to them at this stage of their lives and their senior studies, and also when they move into the adult working world next year.

Year 12s shine in final assessments this term

Hospitality

Our talented Year 12 Hospitality students recently hosted an elegant formal dining event as part of their final assessment. From planning the menu to preparing and serving a delicious two-course meal, students showcased their culinary skills and professionalism in a beautifully styled setting. Guests were treated to restaurant-quality service and an unforgettable dining experience. Congratulations to all involved on a successful and sophisticated event! A big thank you to our staff who supported our students providing them with an authentic dining experience.

Drama

Refugeeism, disguise, deception and gender identity were some of the themes of our Year 12 Drama students' final IA3 assessment performances. Students had to take Shakespeare's romantic comedy 'Twelfth Night' and creatively adapt a scene for a modern audience without changing the written language. Students worked in groups to come up with their directorial vision and bring it to life on stage. Well done to you all!

A little goes a long way when recycling

Zero Waste Solutions owner Lucy Smith visited our Year 7 classes yesterday and today providing waste education about how sorting household waste correctly can reduce contamination and increase recycling efficiency.
Lucy also discussed the harm that can come from plastic pollution, with a particular focus on micro-plastics.
The visit is part of Whitsunday Regional Council's 'Let's Get It Sorted' campaign reminding residents about the important impact recycling can have on our local environment.
