Student Support Services Team
Juniors receive bronze for outstanding artwork
We were very proud to have our first Junior ATSIAP Team compete this year. Our students Savanna Allan, Stefany Allan, Jaxon Poid and Kalianna McAvoy entered and have been busy preparing in the lead up to the competition in Townsville last week.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Aspirations Program (ATSIAP) is an initiative for high-achieving secondary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Queensland state schools. ATSIAP builds upon students' critical and creative thinking skills by providing opportunities to investigate solutions for real-world challenges. ATSIAP aims to raise students' expectations of themselves as learners and enhance post-school aspirations to include tertiary pathways.
Each team member contributed to each challenge and continued to grow in confidence with each of their roles. Overall, our team placed third in the artwork division for their picture called 'The Seedling' and were presented with bronze medallions on the day, with Jaxon unfortunately away due to illness.
I would like to thank our parents for taking the time to drive their child to Townsville. Thank you also to the staff at James Cook University for showing our students around their indigenous facilities. Thank you to North Queensland CEC Regional Consultant Aunty Joan and Kim Mitchell from the Administration Office First Nation Team for organising the event.
Hands-on, solution-focused program set to launch
We are excited to announce that our first session of the six-week, award-winning intervention program RAGE began this term. Re-Navigating Angry and Guilty Emotions (RAGE) is a strength-based, solution-focused program targeting adolescents between 11-17 years of age with many positive, long-term outcomes including behavioural and academic success. It is a hands-on, practical program which helps participants gain insight into their emotions, choices and consequences.
We are inviting parents to contact the facilitator, Mrs. Jahsmyn Martin via email at jmart662@eq.edu.au, if they would like further information, or to discuss the possibility of their child joining the next intake.
