Industry News

Students inspired by Mackay Industry Tour

A group of our senior students enjoyed our Mackay Industry Tour over the school holidays visiting the BHP Future Fit Academy, the Resource Centre of Excellence, and Bryan Industries. Our students had a fabulous day full of new experiences, exploring careers across various industries and networking with potential employers. A particular highlight was the Underground Simulator Mining Facility at the Mackay Resources Centre of Excellence. The mine simulator spans more than 6800m2 and replicates the physical conditions of working underground.
A huge thank you to:
  •  BHP Future Fit Academy for a guided Tour of their training facilities for apprentices and trainees.
  • All the wonderful staff at Mackay Resources Centre of Excellence for the immersive underground tour experience and use of their lunch facilities.
  • Mackay Manufacturing Hub for providing a delicious lunch.
  • The team at Bryan Industries who shared their valuable knowledge and passion with our students to explore all facets of engineering from concept to producing the final product.
A big thank you to our Senior Schooling Officer Mrs Porter and Link and Launch Coordinator Ms Simpson for organising the day and to Ms Watts for driving the bus. We are very proud of each student that took up this opportunity, interacted with industry professionals and represented Prosperine State High School proudly.

Ruhveer shares snapshot of work experience

Our Year 12 student Ruhveer Kaur undertook work experience at the Mackay Pathology Lab. Ruhveer shares with us a snapshot from her week.
"During my week at work experience, I had the opportunity to observe phlebotomists as they drew blood and learned about the intricate process of handling blood samples. I saw how samples were sent to the top pathology lab, where they were analysed and distributed to different departments, including hemotology, infusion, chemistry and microbiology.
It was fascinating to see how samples were tested for various conditions, like COVID-19, and how they used advanced machines to perform full blood counts and other tests. Overall, the experience was both educational and inspiring."
Well done Ruhveer!

Tavis enjoys Townsville Police Academy

Our Year 12 student Tavis McDonald attended the three-day action-packed work experience opportunity with Queensland Police Service during the school holidays. Tavis was one of 19 students from across the state selected to take part in the program experiencing a broad range of QPS specialist areas. These included general duties, Criminal Investigations Branch, Child Protection Investigation Unit, Comms, Policelink, Dog Squad, Prosecutions, PLO’s, Tactical Crime, EORT, Highway Patrol, Scenes of Crime, Forensics, Water Police and many more!

"I loved the opportunity to check out the Water Police boat, to meet with the Dog Squad, and the variety of work the Tactical Squad do," Tavis said.

Tavis also had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with current recruits and see the many pathways available with a policing career. Tavis said he highly recommended the opportunity to others interested in a career in the Police Force.
