Crushing time is on again!
It’s time to use your train brain and look out for cane trains again. Proserpine Mill’s 2025 production season is set to start on Tuesday, 17 June. Cane trains are already on the move ahead of the season’s start. People of all ages are reminded to use their train brains to ensure they stay safe around Wilmar’s cane rail network. Cane trains operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the crushing season.
Although they do not travel at high speeds, cane trains are big and heavy. That means they take a long time to stop.
Always use your train brain and:
- Be alert
- Obey signs and signals at cane railway crossings
- Keep off cane bins and cane railway tracks - especially bridges
- Always give way to cane trains

Council want to hear from you!
Whitsunday Regional Council is inviting community feedback on a proposed Major Amendment to the Whitsunday Planning Scheme, specifically relating to Short-term Accommodation (STA).
The consultation period is open between 8:00am Wednesday 11 June 2025 – 5:00pm Sunday 20 July 2025.
The proposed amendment applies to the Low Density Residential Zone and aims to strengthen assessment benchmarks to clarify that STA is not supported in this zone, except within ten identified precincts with a history of holiday home use.
The proposed amendment does not propose any changes to how it is managed in other zones. For more information, please refer to the attached factsheets or visit the project website https://yoursay.whitsundayrc.qld.gov.au/shape-our-town-plan-short-term-accommodation-amendment
We encourage you to review the proposed changes and share your feedback during the consultation period via our Online Engagement Portal Yoursay, by email to planning.submissions@whitsundayrc.qld.gov.au or hardcopy submission to customer service centres, including name, address and signature.
