Outside the Classroom

Students support littlest learners at Under 8's Day

We had three groups of students organise activities and host stalls at Proserpine State School's annual Big Morning Out - Under 8's Day last week.

Our Science faculty had a fantastic time with our Year 10 Curious Minds ambassadors Mia Matthews, Abby Coghlan and Mackenzie Cantamessa getting their hands dirty helping kids explore ‘fizz reactions’, ‘ooblek’ and some of our science specimens. The primary school students were fascinated with the skeletons and body parts, and had a fantastic time exploring the sensory nature of science.

Our Early Childhood Studies students showed off their creativity painting faces all morning at their stall. Our students helped choose designs and bring them to life adding lots of colour and glitter.

Our First Nations students were set up in the Yarning Circle and were busy all morning playing games, sharing knowledge about First Nations artefacts and sharing traditional painting techniques.

Overall everyone had a great day celebrating Under 8's! A big thank you to all of our staff behind the scenes who supported our students preparing activities and assisting with set-up and pack down on the day. Thank you also to Proserpine State School for inviting us to share in the fun on the day.

Niall inspired to pursue career in Health

Our Year 12 student Niall Tomas took part in the Mackay Hospital and Health Service Careers Program earlier this month. The program is held at the Mackay Base Hospital and covers careers in medicine, nursing, allied health, social work, medical imaging and more!

Niall had to complete a 250-word essay to apply that expressed his passion for healthcare. He said a highlight from the 2-day program was meeting so many Health Industry professionals as well as the practical element of experiencing a state-of-the-art simulation of a hospital emergency department.

Niall completed his Certificate II in Health last year and is currently completing his Certificate III. "Doing my certificates at school helps get me a foot in the door and ready for life when I graduate," he said. Great work Niall!

Fellow peers Savannah Lamont, Belle Howard and Kensa Lloyd will be attending the second program in August.

Seniors invited to Rotary Impact Seminar

Our Year 11 students Macy Werner and Danni Muller were invited to attend the Rotary District 9560 Impact Seminar at the Shute Harbour Marine Terminal earlier this month.

Macy spoke passionately and eloquently at the seminar about her Rotary Youth Exchange experience last year, while Danni assisted with behind-the-scenes duties. Rotary Airlie Beach Secretary Merewyn Wright commented that the seminar organisers and attendees were both very pleased with the girls’ respective contributions to the seminar, and most impressed with their politeness and the way they conducted themselves during the time they were there.

Pictured are our students with Rotary District Governor Mr Andrew Gillespie and with Rotary Airlie Beach Secretary Merewyn Wright. Thank you to the Rotary Club for providing this exciting opportunity for our students to attend.

From athlete to advocate: Chloe shares her story

Australian world record English Channel swimmer and domestic violence survivor, Chloe McCardel, shared her inspiring story from athlete to advocate with our Year 12 students on Monday 26th May.

Chloe's presentation 'Tumble Turn' covered domestic violence awareness including coercive control, with the program originally developed and delivered by the former Queensland Police Service Crime Prevention Unit.
The talk delivered a powerful message about domestic and family violence awareness, prevention, and the strength to overcome adversity. It empowered our students with practical ways to recognise the early signs of DFV, including what to do and where to get help if anyone is experiencing, witnessing or using violence.
Most importantly, the presentation was a story of hope with the overriding message that if you experience DFV or other challenges as a young person you can go on and succeed at the highest level and have positive relationships with yourself and others.

Thank you, Chloe, for speaking up and sharing your personal story with our students for the betterment of their futures and inspiring them to show courage and hope within themselves.

Help us push for a better tomorrow!

Just over one week to go before this year's Push For Better Campaign begins! Proserpine State High School proudly supports our Year 12 student Savannah Lamont and Year 11 student Tyler Hicks, who are leading our school's efforts to raise awareness and funds for positive mental health.

We invite our entire school community to join this important cause from June 4-26. Whether you're a student, staff member, or community supporter, you can contribute by registering to participate or making a donation.

Remember, you don't have to do push-ups during the challenge, with many people choosing squats, lunges and even shuttle runs instead.

Visit the Push for Better website to register or donate by clicking the link below. Together, let’s push for a better tomorrow!
