Tireless effort at annual Bill Turner Cup

1.jpg

On Wednesday 21st May, a team of our students travelled to Mackay to participate in the Bill Turner Cup, a state-wide Under 15 school football tournament.  Our students started the day securing their first win against St Patrick's with a rocket from outside of the goal box by Sam Frumento just before the final whistle.

Then came the second win, a 5-1 hammering of Mackay Northern Beaches. The third win was a tight and physical 2-1 against Mackay North. As the day wore on and tiredness and little injury niggles started to set in, the fourth game with Mackay State High ended in a 1-All draw.

Our team didn't give up, fighting hard until the end but unfortunately going down 3-1 in their final match of the day to Holy Spirit.  A special shout out to the many goal scorers on the day, Samuel Frumento, Eli Wallis, Sam Dowd, Nicholas Moranino, Kobe Marjoram and Ollie Schulz.

A credit also to the tireless work in defence of Tyler Gardiner, Dwayne Mount, Sebastian Draper, Ben Hope and Nicholas Philipson.  It was a fantastic day where all round team work enabled these great results. Thank you to Mr Philipson and Mrs Watts for supporting our students at the event.

Tightly battled contest at AFL Q Schools Cup

Twenty of our senior students headed to Mackay last week to proudly represent our school at the AFL Q Schools Cup. Our boys battled it out on the field across four games, with our first win in Game 1 against Holy Spirit 27-18. Goal kickers were Zavier Goswell, Bon Withyman, and Jack Robertson.

Moranbah State High School kept us on our toes going down 43-18, as did Mackay State High School who won 22-9. Our final game of the day against St Patrick's was a nail-biter, with our boys bringing home the win 16-13 on the final buzzer. Goal kickers in this game were Sam Martin and Zavier Goswell.

The overall winning team was based on fore and against points placing us in second place overall. Outstanding performances on the day were from our team captain Zavier Goswell along with Lucas Allen-Fancke, Liam Steen, Bon Withyman, Saxon Angel and Donny Pettiford.

Congratulations to all the players who played their first ever AFL game! There was strong defence all day from Russel Harris, Riley Parkinson and Matthew Heatley. Great work boys! Thank you to Mr Matthews for taking our students to Mackay to play.

Congratulations to our Year 10 student Sarah Chilton who competed as part of the Northern Queensland team at the 13-15 years Football Championships on the Gold Coast.

The team were strong, winning all of their games in the group stage finishing in pole position on the ladder. This included beating Met North who had not lost a group stage game for three years! This gave the team a bye until the semi-finals where they faced Met West. The game finished 0-0, but sadly the girls lost on penalties 4-3. They then played Peninsula and won the game 2-0, securing third spot and a bronze medal.

Sarah played at centre-half for every game and while she just missed out on making the State team, Sarah performed really well and was voted Players' Player of the Match for their win against Sunshine Coast. Well done Sarah!
