As we reflect on the first semester of the year, I feel immense pride in the outstanding achievements of our students. From successes in sport to showcasing their talents in cultural and artistic endeavours, leadership, and academic success, our students have demonstrated remarkable dedication and skill in their individual fields. Their accomplishments are a testament to their hard work and commitment.
I would like to extend my appreciation to our dedicated staff and the supportive community we have here at Proserpine State High School. Together, our school community has created a diverse array of learning experiences both within and beyond the classroom. This commitment has provided our students with numerous opportunities to explore their talents and passions, thereby enhancing both their learning and personal growth.
SPIRIT Week
SPIRIT Week was another incredible week filled with activities designed to foster connections among students in Care Groups and promote House spirit. With a strong emphasis on participation and fun, the aim was to create a deep sense of belonging within our school community. Through a range of experiences, students formed friendships and built connections among their peers. SPIRIT Week encourages a positive atmosphere in which students feel valued, accepted, and connected, laying the groundwork for an inclusive school environment.
Our student leadership committees were exceptional in their preparations, providing a program of “community” driven activities that offered every student the opportunity to participate throughout the week. SPIRIT Week kicked off with enthusiastic participation by both students and teachers during “Torment a Teacher” on Monday. Thank you to our staff for showing their vulnerability in the name of fun and for raising funds for our term charity - the b kinder foundation.
Each day following this brought exciting events, such as Battle of the Brains, Jersey Day, and the Frisbee Challenge, culminating in the Care Carnival. The Care Carnival was an exceptional day, and I was extremely impressed with the cooperation and respect demonstrated by our students throughout. By taking part in various games and activities, students had the opportunity to connect with two clear expectations: HAVE FUN and PARTICIPATE! The house spirit remained strong right until the very last event.
Our committees have provided overviews of the week’s activities further below in this newsletter, along with galleries of photos for you to enjoy.
House Spirit – House Cup
Our House Cup, which is integrated with our school’s Care Group structure, aims to enhance the daily lives and values of our students through participation and engagement. Throughout Term 2, students from all year levels engaged in a variety of events and activities that promoted House Spirit and, ultimately, the positive culture of our school community.
We are proud to award our House Cup at the end of each term, and at the end of the year to the House that best embodies sporting, academic, and community spirit.
Congratulations to Oxley House for winning the Term 2 House Cup! I also wish to congratulate every student who supported their Care Group and demonstrated remarkable House spirit.

Student Performance at the Australian Citizenship Ceremony
We are proud to share that our Year 12 student Ivy Thompson was recently invited to perform the Australian National Anthem at the Whitsunday Regional Council Citizenship Ceremony. Ivy's beautiful rendition of Advance Australia Fair served as a heartfelt welcome to our newest citizens and was a wonderful representation of our local community.
This special moment highlighted the importance of unity, cultural pride, and the vital role young people play in shaping inclusive communities. Congratulations to Ivy on this outstanding contribution, and to all those who officially became Australian citizens on the day.
b kinder day and Positive Culture Day
This week, our b kinder ambassadors actively promoted random acts of kindness through coordinated activities aimed at helping others, sharing positive messages, and creating a supportive school community. Students enjoyed dressing in bright, multi-coloured clothes and helped raise funds for the b kinder foundation by purchasing a b kinder card, sausage on bread or soft drink from our b kinder ambassador and Senior Student Council stall.
Our first day back for Term 3 will be Positive Culture Day, during which students will work in their Care Groups to create a b kinder display. This activity will serve as a reminder that even a simple, random act of kindness can brighten someone’s day.

Celebrating Sporting Success – North Queensland Selections
We extend our congratulations to all of our students who have been selected to represent North Queensland and State sporting teams this semester. This outstanding achievement is a testament to their dedication and talent across a wide range of sporting pursuits.
Selection at this level recognises not only athletic ability but also the potential to grow and thrive on the sporting field. Whether on the court, the track, the field, or in the pool, their commitment to training, perseverance through challenges, and willingness to represent our school and region with pride is truly commendable.
We wish all our NQ and State representatives the very best as they continue to develop their skills and progress in their respective sports. Carry this experience with great pride and keep the ambition strong in your hearts for the future.

Thank you to Canteen Coordinator – Michelle Milne
Today marks Michelle Milne’s final day in our school Canteen after 13 years of outstanding service to Proserpine State High School. Michelle’s passion, dedication, and commitment to providing high-quality service have made a lasting impact on our students, staff, and wider school community. Michelle continually looked for ways to improve operations and create a welcoming environment for our school community.
Michelle provided care, kindness, and connection to our school. Students often describe the canteen team as “the other family” at school. Her role extended far beyond that of Canteen Coordinator, she helped build a culture of belonging and support for everyone.
Michelle, thank you for your years of service, your generosity, and the genuine care you have given our school. We wish you all the very best for the future.
Happy School Holidays!
As we approach the holiday break, I wish everyone a restful and safe time with family and friends. I am grateful to all of our school staff and the wider school community for their continuous support in offering a diverse range of experiences. Your contributions have been invaluable in helping our students discover and pursue their future pathways in life.
Farewell and Thank You: 13 Years of Dedication
After 13 years of incredible service, our much-loved Canteen Manager, Michelle Milne, is retiring. Michelle has been the heart of our Proserpine State High School Canteen – serving up smiles, nutritious meals, and a generous spirit that has touched students and staff alike.
From early morning preparations to the lunchtime rush, Michelle’s commitment, kindness, and tireless work behind the scenes have made a lasting impact. She has not only kept our Canteen running smoothly but has also played an important role in creating a warm and welcoming environment for all.
Michelle, we thank you for your years of service, your hard work, and your unwavering care for our school community. You leave behind a legacy of generosity and dedication that will not be forgotten.
On behalf of the students, staff, and families of Proserpine State High School – we wish you all the best in your retirement. Enjoy the well-earned rest, and know that you will always have a special place in our hearts.
Confidence grows thanks to Sailability program
On Tuesday 3rd June, a group of our students had the wonderful opportunity to participate in the Sailability Program at the Whitsunday Sailing Club. Sailability is a sailing experience designed to support students of all abilities. With perfect weather and calm waters, our students enjoyed the thrill of sailing, developed confidence, and built valuable social and life skills in a relaxed, supportive environment. A heartfelt thank you to all of our staff who attended and supported students throughout the day. It was a fantastic day of learning, laughter, and new experiences for our students!
Students enjoy focused learning FlexiSpace
This semester, Proserpine State High School has had the privilege of introducing a curriculum supported FlexiSpace program for our junior students. Promoting a new way of working, students are provided tailored teaching and learning opportunities for Maths and English in flexible learning zones to promote engagement. FlexiSpace has been a highly successful program this semester, with gains seen in attendance, academics, and overall student wellbeing.
We are proud to announce the graduation of our Semester One participants, with celebrations having occurred on Monday this week. We look forward to our next group of students who will be joining us in the FlexiSpace in Semester Two.

Year 8 Humanities models bring learning to life
Our Year 8 Humanities students have made small scale models of landforms to go with their Landforms and Landscapes Unit this term. Students could choose from making a volcano, mountain, valley or island from clay using the knowledge they learned throughout the unit.

Many layers to learning in Year 8 Science
During Term 2 Year 8 students studied Chemistry and explored chemical reactions. Part of their learning was about the pH of different substances and understanding what is an acid and what is a base. Students completed a culminating activity which involved layering different liquids in a test tube to create rainbows of colour. They were challenged to create the most layers in one test tube.
Ruby-Lou wins Year 9 Bake Off Competition

Our expert judging panel comprised of Mr Jensen, Mr McDermid, Mrs Muller, and Mr Whybird who faced the deliciously difficult task of tasting and scoring each creation. Winners were judged based on creativity, appearance, and flavour, making this a true test of baking brilliance.

Early Childhood subject wrap up and Kindy visits
In Week 9, our Year 10 Early Childhood students completed their final visit to Proserpine C&K Kindergarten. During this visit, students worked in groups to implement the learning experiences they had planned in class. The activities had to respond to the children’s interests and also aid an area of development. This task enabled students to apply the knowledge gained throughout the unit and also engage in real-world practices like risk management planning and coordinating ideas and roles with others.
It has been lovely to see the connections and friendships that had formed between students and children over the four visits; with students commenting on the kindy children’s energy and capacity to make them feel welcome. We are very grateful to Proserpine C&K Kindergarten for allowing us to visit and glimpse a small part of a valuable and rewarding industry.
“Our visit to the C&K Kindergarten was an unforgettable experience. Filled with fun, laughter, and energy, we very much enjoyed connecting and playing with the kids. All our organised activities that we planned for the children were very successful allowing them to play and learn at the same time. Some of these activities included playdough making, bubble blower making and spray art. We definitely enjoyed this aspect of the subject and hope to get to do it again in the future.” - Daphne Wood and Tokayah Hinschen-Pasikala
Legal Studies students visit District Courthouse

Students observed real court proceedings, spoke with legal professionals, and explored the roles of the judge, lawyers, and court staff. The visit brought classroom learning to life, deepening their understanding of court procedures, trial processes, and the importance of justice in our community.
It was an engaging and eye-opening experience that left many students inspired and more informed about potential careers in the legal field. Students have ended the term enacting a Mock Trial to demonstrate their understanding of the court system.
Impressive North Queensland Strings Workshop
On Thursday 19th June, Proserpine State High School hosted the North Queensland Instrumental Music Strings Workshop, welcoming young musicians from across the region for a full day of inspiring music-making. Students from Proserpine State High School, Cannonvale State School, and Proserpine State School gathered in our Performing Arts Centre to participate in a series of structured ensemble activities and rehearsals.
Led by esteemed guest teachers Robyn Gray (Brisbane), Yvonne Moore (Townsville), and Chloe McLean (Townsville), the workshop catered to both Advanced and Intermediate string students, with participants ranging from Year 4 to Year 9. Throughout the day, students engaged in rehearsals as a string ensemble building technical skills, ensemble awareness, and confidence under the guidance of these experienced educators.
The day culminated in a short performance for family and friends, showcasing a program of both new and familiar repertoire. It was a wonderful celebration of the students’ hard work and progress over the course of the day, with the students thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to learn from new teachers, meet fellow young musicians, and grow as performers.
Thank you to our Instrumental Music Teacher Mr Finn Williams for organising this inspiring workshop for our students.
Farewell to our exchange student, Elin!

SPECIAL REPORT: Celebrating NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is celebrated by all Australians and is a great opportunity to recognise and learn more about the history and culture of Indigenous communities.
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced back to the Aboriginal rights movement, when on Australia Day 1938, protestors marched through the streets of Sydney to highlight the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. Today, it is a week-long celebration held in July that consists of range of traditional and contemporary activities.
NAIDOC Week is an important event that helps build positive relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. It enables a deeper understanding of our differences and similarities and is a great opportunity for all Australians to eliminate bias and discrimination by reflecting and reconciling the wrongs of the past to facilitate hope and build a fairer future. Families are encouraged to join in and support young people in learning the significance of NAIDOC Week.
This Special Report offers suggestions on how families can celebrate NAIDOC Week together. We hope you take a moment to reflect on the information offered, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If this raises any concerns for you, a loved one or the wellbeing of your child, please seek medical or professional help.
Here is the link to your Special Report.

Swimming between the digital flags: helping young Australians navigate social media’s dangerous currents
The relationship between social media and children’s mental health is one of the most important conversations of our time. That's why, from mid-December, the Australian Government will require certain social media services to take steps to prevent under 16s from having accounts.
This week, eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant outlined how Australia plans to take this bold action forward, in a speech delivered at the National Press Club.
Here's what parents need to know right now:
1.It’s not a ban, it’s a delay. We’re giving kids more time to build digital skills and resilience before facing the pressures of social media.
2.The responsibility lies with the platform. There are no penalties for children or parents—only for platforms that fail to take reasonable steps to prevent under 16s from having accounts.
3. You’re not alone. eSafety offers trusted resources for parents and carers, educators, young people and kids. We’ve got the flags, the swimming lessons, and the safety tips to help you support your kids. And our protective powers in areas such as cyberbullying and image-based abuse will still be there to help if things go wrong.
Australia is building a culture of online safety—just like we’ve done on our beaches. Because the internet, like the ocean, is not going away – and our kids are already dipping their toes in. To stay up to date on social media age restrictions, visit eSafety.gov.au.
Help your teen develop healthy boundaries
Some examples of healthy boundaries in a romantic relationship to share include:
- It’s okay to spend time with friends outside of the relationship.
- It’s okay to spend time apart from each other.
- It’s okay to set boundaries on what you can share about your relationship online.
Good relationships come from good communication – asking and talking. Respect is a two way street, so they need to listen to and respect their partner’s boundaries. By doing so, they are also modelling the behaviour that they want to see from their partner.

Do you have any pre-loved school uniforms or out-grown black school shoes in good condition? We would greatly appreciate any donations to our second-hand uniform supply. Items can be dropped off at our Administration Office.
Where are they now? Adam Farrell
What year did you graduate? 2016
What were your senior subjects at Proserpine State High School? English, Maths B, Health Education, Biology, Physical Education, Cert III in Fitness.
Favourite Proserpine State High School memory? Senior Leadership Camp was made extremely memorable by all of the students and teachers involved. There was such a strong sense of comradery and community in our cohort after this camp.
Where did life take you after you graduated? Things didn't go as I'd planned. Soon after graduating, I moved to Brisbane to search for a job to support myself through a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science at University of Queensland. I fell into sales, and quickly found some success. I realised that my degree was unlikely to be useful in achieving the level of success I was pursuing, so during O-Week I made the decision not to continue with this degree, and instead chose to pursue a sales career. I knew I was young, and if I needed to, I could always go back to university next year.
To cut a long story short, that led to my move to New Zealand in 2019 to manage the expansion of a sales business. I then transitioned into property investment consultancy, and have now co-founded Lighthouse Property alongside Lighthouse Financial, where we help everyday people achieve their financial goals.
What job position are you currently in? Director of Property and Sales, Lighthouse Financial (Auckland).
Tell us about why you picked a career in sales and what your study/training journey has been? Sales is an industry that disproportionately rewards high performance. The more you achieve, the more you are rewarded. While salespeople are often stereotyped as pushy or inauthentic - like the classic "greasy car salesman" - my success has come from simply doing the opposite. I prioritise peoples' best interests, and that authenticity builds trust. It's that trust that helps people take significant action towards their goals.
My training has come through daily self-development and ongoing professional courses to continually improve my skills.
Best experience since graduating at Proserpine State High School? Travelling through East Java in 2023 on an expedition with 10 content creators from various countries around the world.
Best advice for current Year 12 students? University is a major investment - both in time and money. While it’s essential for certain careers like medicine, law, or engineering, it's not the only path to success.
Before committing, explore fields that interest you. Talk to people already working in those careers. If you're not certain, take a gap year to gain experience and clarity.
You're young and you have time. Spending one extra year to make the right choice can save you from spending four years - and thousands of dollars - on the wrong one.
Favourite quote? One of my business mentors once told me "money is just the applause you receive from the marketplace". If you want to find success in your career, find the place where you can personally help the most people, and have the biggest impact.
Crushing time is on again!
It’s time to use your train brain and look out for cane trains again. Proserpine Mill’s 2025 production season is set to start on Tuesday, 17 June. Cane trains are already on the move ahead of the season’s start. People of all ages are reminded to use their train brains to ensure they stay safe around Wilmar’s cane rail network. Cane trains operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the crushing season.
Although they do not travel at high speeds, cane trains are big and heavy. That means they take a long time to stop.
Always use your train brain and:
- Be alert
- Obey signs and signals at cane railway crossings
- Keep off cane bins and cane railway tracks - especially bridges
- Always give way to cane trains

The proposed amendment applies to the Low Density Residential Zone and aims to strengthen assessment benchmarks to clarify that STA is not supported in this zone, except within ten identified precincts with a history of holiday home use.
The proposed amendment does not propose any changes to how it is managed in other zones. For more information, please refer to the attached factsheets or visit the project website https://yoursay.whitsundayrc.qld.gov.au/shape-our-town-plan-short-term-accommodation-amendment
We encourage you to review the proposed changes and share your feedback during the consultation period via our Online Engagement Portal Yoursay, by email to planning.submissions@whitsundayrc.qld.gov.au or hardcopy submission to customer service centres, including name, address and signature.
